Game Collection Roundtable 03/06/2016: Zelda: Twilight Princess HD, Fire Emblem: Fates (3DS), Japanese Import Bounty!

Every week, the Diehard GameFAN team adds new games to their collections. Sometimes they are new releases, physical or digital, DLC or full games, but they are all building blocks in our greater collections.

Fire Emblem: Fates (3DS)

Goddammit.

I’ve never been a Fire Emblem FAN in the strictest sense; I’ve owned both of the GBA US releases and the games are FINE, but they’re not for me. I couldn’t get into the permadeath system or the rock/paper/scissors combat mechanics as much as I wanted to, and the games mostly never took me away from Shining Force as my strategy franchise of choice. Fates does a lot to change that, oddly enough, by allowing for more flexible play for basically any player of any stripe, and that’s surprisingly addictive to me. Stripping away a lot of the super-difficult aspects of the mechanics makes it into a fairly normal strategy game with a social aspect, and that’s kind of neat to me, enough that I can say “yeah, even as someone who isn’t into Fire Emblem I kind of love this enough to buy it.” If Fire Emblem keeps up at this rate, hell, it might not be Shining Force but it’s likely the closest thing we’ll get at this point, so okay, I’m all in.

Fire Emblem: Fates – Conquest (3DS) – The rest of them wouldn’t shut up about how great this game is. So fine. I bought it. Then they spent the next several days laughing at me for buying the more difficult of the two Fates, so I ended up ordering Birthright as well. That won’t be here until towards the end of the month thanks to inventory shortages. The moral of the story is that peer pressure is alive and well, even when you’re pushing 30.

Pokemon Yellow (3DS) – Ah hell. I caved on this one too. I’ve played through Red and Blue at various points in my life, but never played Yellow. I figured it’d be worth a shot. Then I found out it doesn’t have Beedrill. I am pissed. Also, starting with a Pikachu when you’re trying to catch a Pidgey outside of Palet Town is absolutely obnoxious. I bet they got a good laugh out it.

Tales of VS (PSP)
Ryu ga Gotoku Kenzan! (PS3)
Kurohyo: Ryu ga Gotoku Shinsho (PSP)
Kurohyo: Ryu ga Gotoku Ashura henu (PSP)
Ryu ga Gotoku Ishin! (PS3)
E.X. Troopers (PS3)
Tingle’s Balloon Fight DS (DS)

I just spent some time in Japan, so given the low prices of used games in Akihabara, I came back with a healthy supply of them. If you don’t recognize the names, Tale of VS is kind of like a Super Smash Bros. clone with Tales characters, the Ryu ga Gotoku games are Yakuza spinoffs, and E.X. Troopers is a Lost Planet spinoff. Oh, and Tingle’s Balloon Fight DS is exactly what it sounds like.

It is the beginning of March and the start of the Spring gaming season!

PS Plus has Broforce and Galak Z, whereas Games with Gold has Styx and Sherlock Holmes. I also have Zelda: Twilight Princess with the sweet Wolf Amiibo ready for release date delivery on Friday.
