Game Collection Roundtable 02/14/2015: New Nintendo 3DS, Zelda Majora’s Mask 3D, Monster Hunter 4

Every week, the Diehard GameFAN team adds new games to their collections. Sometimes they are new releases, physical or digital, DLC or full games, but they are all building blocks in our greater collections.

Lucard

  • The Firefly Diary (Vita)
  • Breath of Fire I (Wii U)
  • Breath of Fire II (Wii U)

BoF I came out on Thursday for the Virtual Console and my GBA version’s battery died so I figured I might as well snatch the two.
Worst game of the year contendor for sure. Thank god it’s free.

  • Reaper Bones Kickstarter II

Reaper Bones Kickstarter II arrived Thursday and even though I paid for it on October 2013, I now have several hundred more things to paint. I guess I’ll count that.

Mark B.

  • Sunless Sea (PC)
  • Fantasy Zone 3D: Opa Opa Bros. (3DS)
  • Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate Collector’s Edition (3DS)
  • New 3DS Monster Hunter 4 Edition

Yes I bought the game even though it comes built into the 3DS. Shut up.

I’ve never been big into the idea of owning collectable versions of consoles… ever, frankly, but it seemed like a logical next step to pick up a New 3DS because Nintendo always makes quality, fairly priced products and honestly I just wanted a system with the right stick built in. Since this is almost entirely due to a love of Monster Hunter, irrational as it might be, I said “What the hell” and went for the version featuring Monster Hunter 4 on the outside, which I’ll almost certainly be unboxing for everyone to look at, if you’re especially into that sort of thing.

Otherwise the only things I’ve actually paid for and played at this point are Sunless Sea and Fantasy Zone 3D. The former is a thoughtful but mechanically awkward game that’s fine conceptually, but as with many games these days borrows the concepts of roguelikes (death is fun, screw your “validity”) while also mounting them to scaling levels (IE death means you learn new stuff). It’s fine, but it’s slow to start, so it’s harder to get into than it should be, so I haven’t done a lot with it. Fantasy Zone 3D, on the other hand, is essentially the game its always been, except with stage select and cash carry-over built in so that those who suck at shooters can play it and make progress one stage at a time. It’s not bad, though I don’t know what to really say about it except that given enough time you can presumably grind your way through it if you’re so inclined. I like it, but then I like the franchise in general so I don’t know if it’s really for anyone but the shooter enthusiast, honestly.

Aaron

  • Killzone: Shadowfall (PS4)
  • Infamous Second Son (PS4)
  • AeternoBlade (Vita)

Added a couple new PS4 games to my collection this week. I guess I got Killzone because I wanted another FPS or something. I’ve never been a big fan of the series. This could have been a huge mistake. On the other hand, I’ve really enjoyed the Infamous games, so grabbing Second Son was kind of a gimmie. The only reason I didn’t grab it before was because I knew I could get it cheaper. Finally, I got a review copy of AeternoBlade. It’s a Metroidvania game that feels like a holdover from the PSX days. I’ll have a review up for it before too long. It likely won’t be the most positive one, though.

Madson

  • New 3DS XL Majora’s Mask Edition
  • The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D Limited Edition
  • Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate Collector’s Edition
  • Hyrule Warriors Majora’s Mask DLC Pack
  • Shulk & Lucario amiibos

This is probably my biggest spending week so far this year. The Hyrule Warriors DLC for Majora’s Mask was a must own, as including Tingle in the roster was something that should have been done from the very beginning (and he’s just as amusing to use as I could have ever dreamed). I also managed to secure both a Majora’s Mask New 3DS XL and the limited edition game to go with it, though I full expect the former to arrive long after the latter. But when it does come, I look forward to taking advantage of the right analog nub to get my Monster Hunter 4 on!

Matt Yaeger

  • Sniper Ghost Warrior
  • Castlevania Lords of Shadow
  • Modnation Racers
  • Killzone 3
  • Dead Space 2 Special Edition
  • Divinity 2 Ego Draconis
  • Watchdogs
  • Akiba’s Trip

Gamestop’s 3 for $10 used sale suckered me in like the fool I am. 3.33 for most of those games is a deal I couldn’t help myself from. I like Sniper Elite V2 and thought that maybe Ghost Warrior was the first one, which looking it up doesn’t appear to be the case though there are a lot of similarities (no kick ass Xray vision though). I haven’t played a Castlevania game in some time so I thought fuck it I’ll try Lords of Shadow for that price hoping it’ll scratch that particular itch. Modnation Racers looked cute, and CJ sold me on the downloadable tracks aspect. Dead Space 2 has Dead Space Extraction as a bonus for that so that’s like two games in one even if I own the Wii version of that game already (madness doesn’t have to be rational). Divinity 2 Ego Draconis I’ve played before and thought was janky as hell but for some reason my brain is drawn to janky but ambitious western RPG games. I’ve bought and sold Two Worlds 2 several times due to this.

Watchdogs was on sale and I enjoy open world Ubisoft games because I like standing on top of towers to reveal maps or something. Akiba’s Trip I place the blame on Mark and Sean about.

On top of all this I still plan on buying Monster Hunter 4.

Don’t tell my wife.
