All right. Tuesday we covered the Johto Gym leaders and yesterday we looked at the Elite Four. Today we’re going to look at the Kanto Gym Leaders. After beating the Elite Four for the first time, your character will be able to go from Johto to Kanto and collect all eight badges there as well. Below you’ll see all eight gym leaders, the Pokemon they wield in Heart Gold & Soul Silver, the Pokemon they used in the original Pokemon Gold and Silver and even the secondary lineup these Gym Leaders have after you beat Red. Are you ready for the final list of the big challenges?

| Electrode – Level 40 (Electric) | Electrode – Level 47 (Electric) |
| Electrode – Level 40 (Electric) | Electrode – Level 47 (Electric) |
| Magenton – Level 40 (Electric-Steel) | Magenton – Level 47 (Electric-Steel) |
| Raichu – Level 44 (Electric) | Raichu – Level 51 (Electric) |
| Electrabuzz – Level 46 (Electric) | Electrabuzz – Level 53 (Electric) |
Two Words: Ground Type. A good Ground Pokemon should steamroll over Lt. Surge. Notice though, that Surge’s Pokemon are much higher level-wise in the Remake.
| Gold and Silver | Heart Gold and Soul Silver |
| Espeon – Level 46 (Psychic) | Espeon – Level 53(Psychic) |
| Mr. Mime – Level 46 (Psychic) | Mr. Mime – Level 53(Psychic) |
| Alakazam – Level 48 (Psychic) | Alakazam – Level 55 (Psychic) |
Once again, there’s not much of a change. Each Pokemon has gained a level in the remakes. Why Bugsy didn’t evolve his cocoons into Butterfree and Beedrill is beyond me. Again, the Pokemon in Heart Gold and Soul Silver are seven levels higher than in the original Pokemon Gold and Silver

| Golduck – Level 42 (Water) | Golduck – Level 49 (Water) |
| Quagsire – Level 42 (Ground-Water) | Quagsire – Level 49 (Ground-Water) |
| Lapras – Level 44 (Ice-Water) | Lapras – Level 52 (Ice-Water) |
| Starmie – Level 47 (Water-Psychic) | Starmie – Level 54 (Water-Psychic) |
Misty’s actually got a pretty solid lineup here. Electric can be helpful against all save Quagsire. Have a Grass Pokemon for it.
| Gold and Silver | Heart Gold and Soul Silver |
| Jumpluff – Level 41 (Grass-Flying) | Jumpluff – Level 51 (Grass-Flying) |
| Tangela – Level 42 (Grass) | Tangela – Level 52 (Grass) |
| Bellossom – Level 46 (Grass) | Bellossom – Level 56 (Grass) |
| Victreebell – Level 46 (Grass-Poison) | Victreebell – Level 56 (Grass-Poison) |
Wow. Erika shies away from the usual seven level increase and boosts it up to ten! Bring Fire and Psychic here.

| Gold and Silver | Heart Gold and Soul Silver |
| Ariados – Level 33 (Bug-Poison) | Weezing – Level 44 (Poison) |
| Crobat – Level 36 (Poison-Flying) | Crobat – Level 47 (Poison-Flying) |
| Weezing – Level 36 (Poison) | Ariados – Level 47 (Bug-Poison) |
| Weezing – Level 36 (Poison)) | Ariados – Level 47(Bug-Poison) |
| Venomoth – Level 39 (Bug-Poison) | Venomoth – Level 50 (Bug-Poison) |
Level increase from the old GB/GBC games range between eight and eleven. This means Janine is going to be a lot harder than you remember. As well, she’s dumped one of her Koffing for a second Ariados. One Psychic Pokemon should be able to take out the entire team across the board though.
| Gold and Silver | Heart Gold and Soul Silver |
| Graveller – Level 41 (Rock-Ground) | Graveller – Level 51 (Rock-Ground)) |
| Rhyhorn – Level 41 (Rock-Ground) | Rhyhorn – Level 51 (Rock-Ground) |
| Kabutops – Level 42 (Rock-Water) | Kabutops – Level 52 (Rock-Water) |
| Omastar – Level 42 (Rock-Water) | Omastar – Level 53 (Rock-Water) |
| Onix – Level 44 (Rock-Ground) | Onix – Level 54 (Rock-Ground)) |
Some big level raises here, but a single Water Type should be able to take out three of Brock’s Pokemon without any trouble. For Omastar and Kaputops, A Grass (or even an Electric) Pokemon should be pretty dominant here.

| Gold and Silver | Heart Gold and Soul Silver |
| Magcargo – Level 45 (Fire-Rock) | Magcargo – Level 54 (Fire-Rock) |
| Magmar – Level 45 (Fire) | Magmar – Level 54 (Fire) |
| Rapidash – Level 50 (Fire) | Rapidash – Level 59 (Fire) |
Man, Poor Blaine. Poor Cinnibar Island. Although his Pokemon are nine levels higher than in the original game, a single Water Pokemon should dominate here.
| Gold and Silver | Heart Gold and Soul Silver |
| Alakazam – Level 54) | Machamp – Level 56 (Fighting) |
| Pidgeot – Level 56 (Normal-Flying) | Pidgeot – Level 60 (Normal-Flying) |
| Rhydon – Level 56 (Rock-Ground) | Rhydon – Level 58 (Rock-Ground) |
| Gyarados – Level 58 (Water-Flying) | – Level 52 (Water-Flying) |
| Arcanine – Level 58 (Fire) | Arcanine – Level 58 (Fire) |
| Exeggutor – Level 58 (Grass-Psychic) | Exeggutor – Level 55 (Grass-Psychic) |
This is a bit odd. Some Pokemon are the same level, some are lower and some are higher. There’s no rhyme or reason to Blue’s remix. One big change is that Alakazam has been replaced by Machamp. This should really throw off a lot of G/S vets. As always, Blue is pretty tough, so just have a balanced team of Pokemon with multiple move Types.
Once you’ve beaten all 16 Gym leaders, the Elite Four, and Red, you’ll be able to go back and face the Kanto Gym Leaders one more time. Be careful though, as their lineups have changed and their power has increased.
| Electrode – Level 52 (Electric) |
| Magnezone – Level 52 (Electric – Steel) |
| Manectric – Level 52 (Electric) |
| Electrivire – Level 56 (Electric)) |
| Pachirisu – Level 58 (Electric) |
| Raichu – Level 60 (Electric) |
| Gallade – Level 53 (Psychic-Fighting) |
| Wobuffet – Level 53 (Psychic) |
| Jynx – Level 54 (Ice-Psychic) |
| Mr. Mime – Level 56 (Psychic) |
| Espeon – Level 58 (Psychic) |
| Alakazam – Level 60 (Psychic) |
| Floatzel – Level 54 (Water) |
| Lanturn – Level 54 (Water-Electric) |
