Top Ten DC Characters I Want to Appear in MK vs DCU

If you haven’t heard by now, the next Mortal Kombat game is going to be MK vs DCU: a crossover game that features the cast of the Mortal Kombat universe versus character from the world of DC Comics. I’m sure for some people this might seem a bit of a stretch, but I honestly couldn’t be more excited about the game. Mortal Kombat’s story and characters in many ways aren’t much different than what you might find in a comic book. Personally I am a bigger fan of Mortal Kombat than I am a fan of comic books, but I asked our staff to help me come up with a list of DC characters that might fit in well with the Mortal Kombat universe who we hope will make it into the final game. This list excludes already known characters such as Batman and Superman since they’re already confirmed as being in the game.

#10 – Blue Beetle

Of all the DC Comics characters, Blue Beetle might be the one that fits in the most with the rest of the characters of Mortal Kombat. Much of the storyline of Mortal Kombat revolves around humans fighting in the tournament representing the Earth Realm, though many of the humans have unique characteristics. The Ted Kord Blue Beetle doesn’t have super powers, other than having an extremely high IQ. However he’s a master at various forms of hand to hand combat as well as an acrobat, wears a blue suit and has a non-lethal gun.

He’s kind of like Johnny Cage if Johnny Cage did cosplay.

#9 – Power Girl

Power Girl

In a game known for its women in tight spandex with lots of cleavage, who better from the DC Universe to represent women than Power Girl? Sure if you look through Power Girl’s history it’s hard to really tell what her powers are, but if anything this would give Midway far more room to work with her character than most other DC Characters. DC Fanboys will not be able to complain if the give her limited powers because depending on the timeline she has had limited powers in the comic series.

Plus there need to be some women in the game if Midway plans on marketing to those without penises. Actually there needs to be women in the game even if they do plan to market to only those with penises. Or is it penisi? I don’t know what the plural is no matter what other people might say.

#8 – The Corinthian

the corinthian

This one is a personal wish. One of the best goddamn books I’ve ever read is Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman series of comics (or graphic novels, whatever). In the comics he is a being that is a personification of a nightmare. That nightmare is The Corinthian. Something that looks like a man with teeth where his eyes should be. While not really that imposing looking with his sunglasses on, there’s no doubt about it, The Corinthian is a sick freak. I want him in the game because he’s scary, and the creative fatalities that they could come up with for this character should be numerous.

Make no doubt about it, Scorpion would run from The Corinthian. So would Shang Tsung and Shao Kahn. You don’t mess with the Corinthian, unless you want to end up dead with pieces of yourself in a collection somewhere.

#7 – Green Arrow

Green Arrow is such an obvious choice that I’d be amazed if he wasn’t in the game. Someone who has learned martial arts and is the best archer in the world? I’d be disappointed if he didn’t show up in the game in some form since all of his special attacks could revolve around his arsenal of trick arrows. Plus he’s helped Batman defeat Superman!

#6 – Nightwing

If you’re going to include Batman in the game you might as well include the original boy wonder, am I right?

A master of several dozen martial art forms he easily fits into the fighting styles represented in the previous Mortal Kombat games. Plus most of the modern Mortal Kombat games have included the fighters having multiple fighting styles and one weapon style. Green Arrow and Nightwing are perfect choices if they decide to go this route as Green Arrow has his bow and arrows and Nightwing has his Escrima sticks that he uses to dispatch villains with.

I’m not sure if the Escrima sticks really match up to the blades that Baraka uses that extend from his wrists, but it does make Dick Grayson a good addition for the game.

#5 – Martian Manhunter

If you need a character to stand up to Mortal Kombat’s Shang Tsung, then J’onn J’onzz is your man. Or Martian. Or whatever the heck he is.

He’s a shapshifter though. Can you imagine a match between Tsung and the Martian Manhunter? Constantly shifting forms throughout the fight in a more violent version game of rock, paper, scissors. Like Tsung he’s not limited to the ability of shapeshifting, super strength, flight, regeneration, the Martian Manhunter has a wide variety of moves at his disposal.

#4 – Cassidy

Haven’t read The Preacher comics? What’s wrong with you! FIND THEM. READ THEM.

Even if you think comics are probably the geekiest thing ever, check these out. Actually if you think comics are the geekiest thing ever, then congrats for reading even this far.

Cassidy. What videogame out there doesn’t need a self loathing vampire? That’s the best kind of vampire. Cassidy could be the DC comics version of Bo’ Rai Cho, the drunken master. Because that’s all Cassidy does is get drunk and fight. Well he also mopes and drinks blood and has to hide from the sunlight. With Cassidy you have a wise cracking character who is drunk and undead, what else could fit better with the Mortal Kombat games?

#3 – Green Lantern

Another green hero on the list.

While there is a couple of different Green Lanterns, let’s stick to the most well-known one, John Stewart. Daily Show host by day, super hero by night. Kidding.

Green Lantern is actually the most difficult one to add to this list since by fighting game standards the powers of the ring are overpowered for a fighting game. But hey, the game has Superman in it, so I’m not going to worry about any character being overpowered. The Green Lantern Corps are sort of the universe’s police force and each member has a ring that grants them extraordinary powers that is controlled by the individual’s will power. John Stewart can use the ring for things like flying, telekinesis, and even creating objects. In fighting game terms, Green Lantern would be a top tier character. Besides between him and Green Arrow we’re talking about a palette swap, and it’s not like Mortal Kombat has ever had multiple characters who look like the colors have been palette swapped, right?

#2 – Darkseid

Mortal Kombat has many Gods, why not have one more?

If you are going to have Superman in your game then he should have an enemy who can rival him. Enter Darkseid. While not typically someone you see fighting in comic books, normally he’s the person who plans the schemes, Darkseid has an array of formidable powers. He’d fit right in with the Elder Gods of Mortal Kombat, and his numerous abilities mean that those that develop the game would never have to worry about what special abilities to give him, instead they’d have to worry about what ones they’d have to leave out.

And finally the number one DC character I’d love to see in the new Mortal Kombat game?

#1- Swamp Thing

swampthing.jpg

What we’ve heard of the story of MK vs DCU sounds like it would be a perfect fit for Swamp Thing. As his status as an Earth Elemental Swamp Thing would try to protect his realm from an invasion of another. As a character with his abilities he would fit into the same hierarchy as Darkseid, pretty much the top tier of characters based on their abilities much like Blaze, Onaga, Raiden, Shao Khan, etc.

Feel free to scroll down to check out character artwork for the upcoming MK vs DCU game that will be coming out later this year by Midway Games. Have any comments or feedback regarding the article? Please leave a comment or send the author and email.

This game is possibly the only reason I’m thinking of buying a PS3.

I’m all for Swamp Thing, but would you deny me a 3way dance between Captain Cold, Mr. Freeze, and Sub-Zero?

I’m pretty sure it’s coming out for 360 too, Danny.

Hmmm…then maybe I WON’T get that PS3 cuz I really have no desire to spend the cash on it.

Shang Tsung Vs. Green Lantern Vs. Sinestro – not sure why, but it just sounds good!

Well, if you don’t have either system, just see which one has more exclusive games you want. There’s no sense buying a system for one game, after all.
