Microsoft Considered Making Xbox One Digital-Only w/No Discs At all

After Microsoft announced its DRM plans for game discs on Xbox One at E3 in June, consumer feedback was extremely negative. This led Microsoft to change their policies to more closely match the Sony’s plans for PS4 as well as status quo on Xbox 360.

However, they nearly went with an option that would have not been so reversible!

According to Microsoft Studios boss Phil Spencer, the company almost went with a “purely disc-less console” for Xbox One. In an interview with the Official Xbox Magazine, Spector noted:

Obviously, after the announcement and E3… There was a real discussion about whether we should have an optical disc drive in Xbox One or if we could get away with a purely disc-less console, but when you start looking at bandwidth and game size, it does create issues….

So we decided – which I think was the right decision – to go with the Blu-ray drive and give the people an easy way to install a lot of content.
