I know the podcasts are a week or two behind. You guys stated pretty definitively that you didn’t particularly want Nintendo to buy Atlus. Considering the current rumors, how do you guys feel about Sega ending up with Atlus?

Well I know what Mark’s opinion on that is.

“As long as it isn’t Sony”

In fairness, Sony would almost definitely be the worst non-Western choice possible.

They wouldn’t be the worst company, though I suspect a lot of niche stuff that Atlus would normally release, Sega wouldn’t. Any games they DO release would likely show up on every platform for years to come though.

I was actually thinking about writing a column on this, but to sum it up:

EA/Activision/Basically any western publisher – Dead in five years, do not want.

Sony – To paraphrase Scott Keith, “Nothing personally offensive meant to anyone, but if you think Sony’s the best possible option to pick up Atlus, you’re a goddamn crack smoking brain dead moron.” Kills 3DS releases dead, probably murders Atlus US dead, and Sony would be ALL ABOUT restricting the release of games it deemed too niche for no obvious reason. For reference see Working Designs, Agetec, Sakura Wars, Shadow Tower Abyss, Persona 2 Innocent Sin, Demon’s Souls, and I could probably keep going all day.

Nintendo: Given the whole Operation Rainfall hubbub and the decision to prevent TECMO from releasing Fatal Frame 4 here, I have no faith Nintendo wouldn’t prevent a good number of Atlus games from coming stateside if they conflicted with other Nintendo releases. It’d also likely kill Atlus US dead, and given that it restricts Atlus RPG’s to the Wii U and 3DS, limits their availability.

Konami – If you want to see SMT games farmed out to MercurySteam and Russian developers or treated like Hudson, be my guest.

Sega – If Sega treats them like a stand-alone developer, that’s not a bad idea; Sega’s already shown they’re fine allowing Atlus to publish Sega games, so I see no reason for them to not just let Atlus US go on with business as usual, and Sega’s not likely to hold anything back if they don’t have to deal with localizing it. If Sega brings them in-house, though, that’ll be a problem since they’ll likely make suggestions for new games no one wants or, worse, fold the development talent into their own brands, which is… ew. Sega also has problems with what games they will and won’t bring stateside, which would be awkward.

Square Enix: If they give Atlus the Eidos treatment, I’m all for it; it’s only if they bring Atlus in-house that I think it’ll be a bad idea. I know a lot of people are saying OMG THEY’LL MAKE LIEK OVER NINE THOUSAND FREEMIUM GAEMS BASED ON PERSONA but, so what? If it gets me Persona 5 I don’t care if they flood the iOS market with freemium BS, I don’t have to pay for it and neither do you, it doesn’t have an impact on my life and no one’s putting a gun to your head and making you download it. It doesn’t noticeably impact my experience with the console games and if it gets me games I WANT to play and pay money for, I’m all for it.
