Ten Games I’d Like To See at E3 2012 (But Most Likely Won’t)

I will preface this by saying that this is more or less a list of things (in no particular order) that I would like to play or be shown in a further capacity at E3 2012 that the cynic in me believes will likely not happen. It could be because the ship has sailed as far as localizing said games goes, or because the development is not far enough along yet to even have something to show. Whatever the reason is, I would like to see more info on the North American release of games like…

Project X Zone (Nintendo 3DS) – Collaborations are nothing new in the video game world, as titles mixing franchises from multiple companies (Street Fighter X Tekken) or games that include guest appearances from big name characters (SoulCalibur V) are becoming increasingly common. But never have I seen a game with the kind of diverse cast coming from the minds of Namco Bandai, Sega, and Capcom. Project X Zone is a tactical RPG with characters from popular series like Resident Evil and Tekken as well as incredibly niche titles (in the US) like Sakura Wars and .hack. Even if this game turns out terrible, I will still get chills from the ability to put Mega Man X and Yuri Lowell in a party together. Considering the game isn’t even out in Japan yet, there will likely not be anything of note at E3 this year, but here’s hoping!

Genso Suikoden: Tsumugareshi Hyakunen no Toki (Sony Playstation Portable) – The latest PSP Suikoden getting a localization announcement is so far outside the realm of possibility in my mind that I might as well put it in the impossible category. There are a number of things going against it, not the least of which is the fact that hardly anyone is releasing anything for the system anymore save for Atlus, and the fact that the Suikoden franchise was never a huge seller for Konami in the US. The only thing that makes me believe there could be a chance (and I mean a small chance) is that it could be released in a digital capacity to where Vita owners would be able to pick it up too. I mean, we did get Suikoden Tierkreis for the Nintendo DS, and that wasn’t exactly a winner in the eyes of fans.

Tales of Xillia (Sony Playstation 3) – This one seems a bit more likely considering we did get both Tales of the Abyss and Tales of Graces f just this year alone. At the same time, Namco Bandai is very choosy when it comes to which Tales games it decides to release in the US, bringing out titles like Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology when we could have gotten the PSP port of Tales of Destiny 2 instead. There have been hints dropped of the game potentially seeing a release here if the demand was strong enough, though where does that line exist? This year’s releases had sold out at some point, but the game had a small print run to begin with, which doesn’t mean a whole lot. Hopefully, there will at least been some sort of announcement regarding this game.

Valkyria Chronicles III (Sony Playstation Portable) As with the Suikoden game, I think the most that this game could hope for is a digital download or a release on the new Vita system. Despite Sega’s willingness to please their fans despite low return numbers bringing over games like those in the Yakuza franchise, Valkyria Chronicles II just did not do that well for them and from a business standpoint, I could see why they would be hesitant to release the third entry in this revered franchise as well. Considering the appearances of some of the characters in this game will be making their way into the aforementioned Project X Zone, perhaps they may see the potential cross promotion as a reason to finally bring this game stateside. It’s a long shot (a real long shot), but I would squeal like a little girl if they revealed anything that could remotely be interpreted as a possibility for this game.

Pandora’s Tower (Nintendo Wii) – It was about this time last year when everyone was hoping that any of the so called Operation Rainfall games would be making their way to the US, much less any particular one. With Xenoblade Chronicles having sold a speculated 200,000 copies in North America alone and The Last Story being brought over by XSEED, now seems like the perfect opportunity to shine some light on this otherwise forgotten third title. Even if Nintendo themselves doesn’t deem the effort worthwhile, I could see NIS, Atlus, or somebody else perhaps taking a chance on it. I doubt it would happen at E3 considering the last two were not revealed there, but I certainly wouldn’t complain if they did.

The Legend of Zelda HD (Nintendo Wii U) – This is not the official title, of course, but that doesn’t change the fact that that’s basically what it is. At E3 2011, Nintendo showed off a demo reel with a short clip of footage containing what a Zelda HD title could look like on the Wii U. The last time they showed what a Zelda “could look like” was on the Gamecube, which eventually became The Wind Waker, so it’s likely that nothing featured in that footage will be used in the final game. Still, it’d be nice to see even something so simple as concept art or anything that might reveal what the art design or general direction of the game may become. I’d even settle for news on the eventual 3DS Zelda title.

Fire Emblem 3DS (Nintendo 3DS) – Again, likely not what the localized name will be. This one I have slightly higher confidence in seeing over all of the others given the fact that Nintendo has been experimenting with the use of DLC in the game. The last Fire Emblem game, Shin Monshō no Nazo: Hikari to Kage no EiyÅ«, never saw a US release, though judging by some of the design choices in the latest title (customizable main character, the ability to turn off perma-death, etc), it seems like they might be aiming for more of a mainstream market than they were previously. If they actually had this in playable form on the show floor, that would be all the better.

Super Smash Bros. (Nintendo Wii U) – I’m pretty sure that when this got name dropped last year, they had not even started on it and just wanted to get people excited. Well, it worked. I remember during the months leading up to Brawl how each day there was an update on some new character or feature, sending my anticipation through the roof. As much as enjoyed the end product, there are most certainly improvements that could have been made, such as better online functionality and a more balanced line-up of characters. Who knows, maybe there will be some character reveals if they do talk about it. I personally predict Isaac from Golden Sun and Little Mac from Punch-Out!! as the next playable characters.

Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 2 – Eternal Punishment (Sony Playstation Portable) – Considering that Atlus is still publishing games on the system (Growlanser IV and Gungnir will be releasing in the coming months) and that they’ve been really good about localizing Shin MegaTen games, this is the PSP game that still seems like it could take shape in North America. Granted, there already exists a version of Eternal Punishment on the original Playstation, but the second-hand value on that game is through the roof and it’d be nice for the original Persona trilogy to be complete in portable form. They could even pull the old script from the PS1 version and I would be okay with that. While they’re at it, a peek at the 3DS Soul Hackers remake would be pretty sweet.

Final Fantasy Versus XIII
(Sony Playstation 3) – This is shaping up to be the Duke Nukem Forever of Final Fantasy games at this point. First unveiled at E3 in 2006, there has been alarmingly little information on the game despite supposedly being in full production. For a game that has been in development for that long to have so little to show, not even a gameplay demo, is a bit disconcerting. I would love to see more of this game at E3, but I’m not going to hold my breath. At this point, I would advise Square Enix to just release the thing regardless of the state it is in so we can all move on.

And there you have it. Be sure to keep checking back at Diehard GameFAN to catch our coverage of games that will be appearing at E3 this year. If it’s anything like years past, you won’t want to miss it!

I could go for all of these, but especially Suikoden (I’ve heard the PSP game is better than Tierkreis), Fire Emblem, Valkryia Chronicles III, and Eternal Punishment (which at least we have a good chance of getting).

Also, Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright. And Ace Attorney Investigations 2 (fat chance on that one, though).

Valkyria Chronicles III is high on my want list. The story sounds a lot more interesting than the second game. I like the whole idea of a functional group of misfits as a combat unit. I didn’t hate the second game, but I beat the first game in a week, the second one has taken me years and I’m still not done. Suikoden would also be nice.

Even if they bring them over as PSP titles, as long as they make them available on the PSN and available to play as PSVita titles they’d be set.
