E3 2010 First Impressions: Marvel vs. Capcom 3 (Xbox 360)

Browsing the Microsoft booth, we couldn’t help but be drawn to the majesty that is Marvel vs. Capcom 3.

The E3 2010 demo had 8 selectable characters – The Hulk, Wolverine, Captain America and Deadpool on the Marvel Side, and Ryu, Morrigan, Dante and Chris from Resident Evil on the Capcom side.

Each player choose three team members as in MvC2, with each character having 2 styles from which to choose from.

Graphically, MvC3 looks amazing, with huge detailed characters that explode with color and animation. Even simple moves like Ryu’s Fireball have been supersized, similar to how the graphical style is in Tatsu vs. Capcom, but in HD.

Gameplay wise, it plays a lot like the other Marvel vs Capcom games, but with the larger 3D models more like in Street Fighter 4 or Tatsunoko vs. It’s tough to get overly specific on fighting game controls in the madness of e3, but a cursory observation that the game “feels” right, even in this early stage.

In the spirit of full disclosure, I played our very own Greg Johnson and he DESTROYED me, just using Dante to reign blows upon me. I was shamed.

Marvel vs. Capcom 3 isn’t set to be released until Spring 2011, but already it has the kind of polish that fans will expect. With almost a year left of development time, hopefully the roster will be varied and robust.
