Virtual Console Wrap-up – 3/16

Remember those fancy new Commodore 64 games Nintendo put out a few weeks ago? Well, they finally remembered them, too, as this week, we’re getting Summer Games II. What happened to Summer Games I?

Summer Games II
Developer: Epyx
Publisher: Commodore Gaming
System: Commodore 64
Original Release Date: 1985
Price: 500 Wii Points

Alex Lucard: Not bad

Christopher Bowen: Um… is this like California Games?

Nathan Birch: Yeah, same developer…except instead of various wacky “cool” sports it’s Olympic sports (except without the official license). Well anyways, we know Wii owners like their collections of sports mini-games, sooo maybe it would be worth it?

Charlie Marsh: I have no experience with this game, nor do I have experience with any other C64 game, but I can say that nothing about Summer Games II interests me at all. Then again, I’m not really a fan of the “-Games“ games. The list of mini-games includes triple jump, high jump, javelin throw, rowing, kayaking, and more. Nothing says excitement like 1980’s-graphics javelin throwing! So yea, unless you’re a hardcore fan of the Olympics, take a pass.

Well, Summer Games II gets a decided “meh” out of us. On Wii Ware, we’re getting Bit.Trip Beat, a rhythm game with a retro look and feel. That looks right up my alley, and if you think so too, it’s 600 points. Until next week, spend those points wisely.

I thoroughly enjoyed Summer Games on the C64 as a kid, but, much like California Games, I thought the real gem of the EPYX bunch was World Games. Cliff diving, barrel jumping and caber tossing were hilarious and two-player sumo wrestling and log rolling were pretty intense. I wouldn’t be surprised if World Games came along down the road.

I loved world games. Caber toss, sumo, cliff diving. It rocked!
