Virtual Console Wrap-up – 12/8

They’ve done it again, folks. The Virtual Console has experienced another one game weak. I mean, week. Stupid Freud…

Anyway, this week’s lone VC title is Sonic the Hedgehog 2 from the Master System. That doesn’t sound too bad, but let’s see what the rest of DHGF has to say about it.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Developer: Aspect
Publisher: Sega
System: Sega Master System
Original Release Date: 1992
Price: 500 Wii Points

Guy Desmarais: Never played it, but I’m guessing it’s like Sonic 2 for the Genesis with uglier graphics?

Alex Lucard: There was a time where I rejoiced in the concept of the Virtual Console. The promise of so many games from yesteryear that I could play once more without fear of having to blow in a cart or losing my saved data from years of sitting.

Indeed the Virtual Console gave me many I game I treasured from my youth and I quickly filled up the internal memory with downloaded games. For a retrogamer like myself, it was a little slice of Heaven.

Then they do weeks like this where they give us the Master System version of a game already available on the VC in Genesis form and they wonder why people crap all over the people who handle the VC for NoA compared to the Europe and Japanese divisions.

What the hell, Nintendo?

Okay, the bile is not entirely deserved. The SMS version is a completely different game in every respect and the hang-gliding bits are good fun. It’s not a bad game. In fact it’s a pretty fun SMS platformer all things considered, but it just doesn’t hold up compared to the Genesis version and what else we know is lying in wait to be released.

Christopher Bowen: Well, at least I won’t have to describe just what this game is. Everyone and their dog knows what Sonic 2 is about, because this game has been whored out by the pimps at Sega so many times that I almost want to swab it with a Q-Tip before I’ll let it anywhere near me. Who pissed Nintendo off this week? That seems to be the norm; someone pisses Nintendo off, they decide they want to be pricks about their service, they decide to give us one of the shitty games in their lineup, we the consumer are told to eat cake. I’m just wondering who pissed Nintendo off this week.

Meanwhile, the Phantasy Star IV Watch continues into its third week. Hey Nintendo! Remember what I said about the VC in 2006? You’re doing a good job of proving me absolutely right. At least we can say we had a better weekend than Europe, which doesn’t seem to have gotten shit last Friday.

Nathan Birch: Is this the same as the Game Gear version of Sonic 2? If so it’s my least favourite 2D Sonic game ever. Seriously Nintendo, cut this Master System Sonic shit out.

Charlie Marsh: I remember this being the first game I ever had for Game Gear. I couldn’t quite get a hold of the hang glider thing, but it was pretty fun. I can only imagine it gets more fun with a larger screen. However, Sonic 2 on the Genesis is much more fun, much better, and available on the Wii in a variety of ways, so I’d go for that if Sonic’s your thing.

Aileen Coe: Joy of joys, another romp through Sonic’s second adventure, only with more…Spartan graphics. And…uh, it’s 300 points cheaper for the privilege. Gee, I don’t know about you, but I’m just bursting in glee.

Seriously, another version of a game that’s already been released on the VC? Really, Nintendo? Really?

That does it for the VC. On Wii Ware, we have Bruiser and Scratch, a puzzle game, and Hockey Allstar Shootout, a hockey skills competition sim that has a whopping 3 games. Outstanding. Kind of a lame week all around…spend your Wii points wisely.
