Gaming Zen 9-26-05

Hello hello. It’s Tom Pandich back another week with more useless opinions and useful information about your favorite games. I had a long weekend where my Saturday was spent vomiting and then cleaning up vomit. For that reason and many more this will be a pretty short column, just covering the game of the week. Next week though, the old column will be entering a new format. It’ll be moderately interesting hopefully so look forward to it.

Quick news round-up

There are a few stories going around worth mentioning. The big one this week is that Sony is cutting 10,000 jobs or 7% of their global work force. This was to raise profits and streamline operations according to Sony. This seems more like a knee jerk response from Sony as this year will be the first time they’ve posted a loss in over a decade, due in large part to slightly sluggish sales of the PSP, especially in Japan. Coupled with slower then usual box offices and the cost of developing a new DVD format, it makes sense what caused the loss. With another launch coming up next fiscal year, it makes a heck of a lot of sense that Sony is making the cuts.

Other news is that the Game Boy Micro has sold 150,000 units in Japan so far. It’s a pretty good launch considering it’s essentially a system that’s almost DOA. Rockstar is bringing back San Andreas. The XBox is getting a trilogy of the GTA games (3, Vice City, San Andreas) and the PS2 is getting a special edition of San Andreas with production videos. It’ll be out in time for the holiday season. Lastly both Tekken and Virtua Fighter are rumored to be coming to the PSP.

Game of the Week

I have not played any of the games out this week yet nor do I plan to. I hate video games!!1111 Still, I’ll try to pick what game sounds the most interesting this week. Releases are picked from what Misha says so if the winning game isn’t out this week, it’s his damn fault. Except Misha’s job was cut to increase profits and kick backs for Lucard. Widro really needs to come back from his vacation. Oh and this will be console games only as you’ll probably end up downloading the PC games anyways.

The game of the week is… *drum roll* Capcom Classics Collection. Despite DDR Extreme 2 having perhaps the best song list of any US release and a new PokÃÆ’©mon hitting US shores, Capcom has a great collection here that is must own. Final Fight, Street Fighter 2, Ghosts and Goblins, and a bunch of other titles are in this thing. Pick it up as it may be the best collection ever released on any system ever.

That’s it for this week. See you next week.
